Stipple Drawing
Stipple is a technique in which you use dots to create the value or shading.
  • Put your dots closer together to create dark values, and farther apart to create light values. Areas that are meant to be white should be left without dots.

Below: this is a good example. Notice the nice range of values, the background, and the good use of space. This was also created from a photo, not from a drawing, or computer generated image.

Below: This isn’t a great example. The use of a heavy outline is undesirable. Also, no background was used.

The Assignment:
You will create a stipple picture.
  • You will work from a photograph. Please no logos, symbols, words, or characters you didn’t invent.
  • You will draw it on an 11”x17” paper in pencil first. Shade it using dots.
  • You will include a background.
  • You will not make up a background.
  • You may only use ONE pen at a time!
  • Erase out the pencil when you are done.
  • Don’t color in large areas using lines; ONLY use dots.
